1 Three-dimensional shape and two-dimensional surface reeectance contributions to face recognition: Abstract We measured the three-dimensional shape and two-dimensional surface reeectance contributions to human recognition of faces across viewpoint. We rst divided laser scans of human heads into their two-and three-dimensional components. Next, we created shape-normalized faces by morphing the two-dimensional surface reeectance maps of each face onto the average three-dimensional head shape and reeectance-normalized faces by morphing the average two-dimensional surface reeectance map onto each three-dimensional head shape. Observers learned frontal images of the original , shape-normalized, or reeectance-normalized faces, and were asked to recognize the faces from viewpoint changes of 0, 30 and 60 degrees. Both the three-dimensional shape and two-dimensional surface reeectance information contributed substantially to human recognition performance, thus constraining theories of face representation to include both types of information.

Three-dimensional shape and two-dimensional surface reflectance contributions to face recognition: an application of three-dimensional morphing

We measured the three-dimensional shape and two-dimensional surface reflectance contributions to human recognition of faces across viewpoint. We first divided laser scans of human heads into their two- and three-dimensional components. Next, we created shape-normalized faces by morphing the two-dimensional surface reflectance maps of each face onto the average three-dimensional head shape and r...

Computing reflectance ratios from an image

This paper presents a photometric invariant called reeectance ratio that can be computed from a single brightness image of a scene. The brightness variation in an image of a surface depends on several factors; the three-dimensional shape of the surface, its reeectance properties, and the illumination conditions. Since neighboring points on a smoothly curved surface have similar surface orientat...

The relative weight of shape and non-rigid motion cues in object perception: a model of the parameters underlying dynamic object discrimination.

Shape and motion are two dominant cues for object recognition, but it can be difficult to investigate their relative quantitative contribution to the recognition process. In the present study, we combined shape and non-rigid motion morphing to investigate the relative contributions of both types of cues to the discrimination of dynamic objects. In Experiment 1, we validated a novel parameter-ba...

The Application of Numerical Analysis Techniques to Pattern Recognition of Helicopters by Area Method

In this paper, a new method to selecting different viewing angles feature vector is introduced to recognition different types of Helicopters. Feature vector 32 components based on characteristics of the shape, Area and a length to describe a binary two-dimensional image was created, shape feature and length feature not only effective but area features effective and were used. New features vecto...
